Get to know Kate Unsworth

Kate Unsworth's long held passion for homes and interiors led her to start an online homewares store, Yellow Front Door, three years ago.

How did you come to start your own business, and what did you do previously?

I started Yellow Front Door three years ago after taking a break from work for five years to have children. Starting an online homewares business seemed like the natural thing to do because I've always loved anything related to property and interior design, and was really keen to work from home and have flexible hours. My previous careers were in occupational therapy, travel and teaching, so a bit of a change, but houses have always been my passion.

What do you love most about your job?

I really love sourcing new and exciting products, and I hunt down pieces from both Australia and overseas. I always contact the designer or artist personally and find out about them, so all our cushions and artworks have a story and none are mass-produced.

How does having your own business fit in with family life?

It's the perfect balance for us. My husband works long hours so I need to be flexible, and I love being able to attend things like sports carnivals and reading groups at my children's school. It's definitely important though for me to also attend events like design expos in order to meet people, get new ideas and inspiration, and stay motivated.

What key trends you are enjoying at the moment?

I am really enjoying all the natural products and earthy colours - solid wood, stone and marble, linen and leather. We are in the process of designing a new kitchen/dining room for our house and are opting for stone floors with underfloor heating, oak cabinetry, marble bench tops, a leather banquette, and huge glass bifold doors to the garden.

Where do you live now?

We live in Bondi Beach - on a quiet street with super-friendly neighbours but near the action of Hall Street and the beach. We've lived in Bondi for 6 years and would struggle to imagine living anywhere else.

What’s your dream home, anywhere in the world?

Definitely a beach house overlooking the ocean - you said I can dream! Something simple, spacious and sunny with lots of outdoor areas. I love Waiheke Island near Auckland (where I grew up), or maybe the Mediterranean coast of Europe.
